If you are a colleague, family member or employer of a person in crisis here are a number of valuable suggestions for how you can help and support.

Offer practical help
Even everyday chores such as cooking, laundry or fetching kids from school can seem insurmountable. Offer emotional support.

A person in crisis needs to have someone who calmly listens to an account of what happened and who can handle the powerful feelings of, for example, despair, anger or fear.

These feelings can often be contradictory and violent and it helps to express them. Many people also find it helps to cry.

Be available
Tell the person that you are ready to help and support, also in the future.

It is important to seek distractions and take breaks from thoughts about what has happened.
