Treatment for depression

There are several degrees of severity of depression and the treatment depends on which type you suffer from.

Triggering factors
All of us are more or less predisposed to depression and our predisposition may either be hereditary or established early in childhood. Typically, our predisposition interacts with one or more triggering factors or events. This might be greater or lesser stresses which can contribute to triggering depression and that therefore also affect any treatment.

  • Loss of someone close
  • Accident
  • Redundancy
  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Lack of exercise, light and/or sleep

Different categories
Depression is commonly divided into three categories: mild, moderate and severe. Cognitive oriented therapy is often recommended to treat mild and moderate depression and is often sufficient.

It may be necessary in the case of severe depression to supplement psychological treatment with medicinal treatment, or in special cases to treat depression with medicine alone.

Cognitive conversation therapy with a psychologist is an effective treatment for depression.

Should I report sick?
Your doctor can help you to decide if it is necessary that you take time off work due to possible depression.

The evaluation will normally depend on how severe your depression is assessed to be and how it relates to your work situation.
